NMIMS Ban Update: UGC Removes Ban on NMIMS Online Education

In its groundbreaking decision, the UGC has officially lifted the ban on admission to the NMIMS university online courses. This will permit the university to admit students to all its online courses.

The UGC, a statutory body of the Government of India, barred NMIMS from accepting new admission from February 2023 due to non-compliance with higher education norms. It was a significant setback for the university and its students.

Following the ban, NMIMS has diligently addressed all the concerns raised by the UGC, demonstrating its commitment to upholding higher education norms. This proactive approach has led to the revocation of the ban, allowing the university to resume its admission process for various online courses such as MBA and BBA.

The Roadblock - Why UGC Imposed the Ban on Online Courses of NMIMS? 

In February 2023, the University Grant Commission of India (UGC) barred NMIMS from offering online/distance courses to new students. The same thing happened with Tamil Nadu's Periyar University in 2022.

In the case of NMIMS, the primary reason behind this strict action by UGC was the university's non-compliance with higher education institution norms. 

To be specific, the non-compliance includes - 
  • Not having enough faculties
  • Inadequate non-teaching staff
  • Offering Online courses without UGC approval
  • Low quality of Self-learning Material
These were some major reasons behind UGC banning the NMIMS's online courses. Apart from these reasons, there were other reasons, such as not following the fee refund policy created by UGC. 

The UGC receives so many complaints from students and their parents regarding the issues listed above. Therefore, after cross-checking all the complaints, UGC banned all the activities of NMIMS related to distance education. 

One thing that should be considered is that the ban only affected new admissions, not existing students. Also, UCG only banned online courses at the university, not offline courses.

Due to this, many students had to put their academic plans on hold, which led to frustration and uncertainty. However, the UGC's decision to lift the ban has brought some hope for the students. Now, students can complete their academic programs as they have planned.

A New Chapter -  Why UGC Gives Green Light to NMIMS’s Online Education

In its recent notice,  UGC has revoked the ban imposed on the NMIMS university. This allowed the university to continue offering online/distance courses and start the admission process for the same.

With a firm commitment to quality education, NMIMS University has diligently addressed all the issues raised by UGC. The university has taken significant steps to rectify the issues, including enhancing e-learning facilities, recruiting highly qualified and experienced faculty, upgrading infrastructure, and improving the quality of study materials. Furthermore, the university has aligned its fee refund policies with UGC norms, resolving any discrepancies. 

As a result, UGC lifted the ban imposed on the university.

NMIMS -  A Closer Look

Narsee Monjee Institute of  Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai, is one of the most prominent universities in the world.
